At the State Science and Technology Awarding Ceremony held on the morning of Jan 9th in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, scientist Li Aimin and his team was honored the Second Prize of the State Science and Technology Advancement Award for their project on “Research and application of key technology in treatment and toxicity reduction of non-degradable organic industrial wastewater”.
Li Aimin, 54, Deputy Dean of the School of Environment of Nanjing University, Director of State Environmental Protection Engineering Center for Organic Chemical Industrial Wastewater Disposal and Resources Reuse, and President of Nanjing University-Yancheng Academy of Environmental Technology and Engineering(NYAETE). Dr. Li is also a professor of the Yangtze River Scholar Award Program, a leading expert of the Ten Thousand Talent Program, and the Chief of the National 12th Five-Year-Plan Key Program of Water Pollution Control and Treatment - Huai River Project.
The technology developed by Li Aimin and his team in treatment and toxicity reduction of non-degradable organic industrial wastewater can effectively lower the toxicity of wastewater and make it reusable. Quality of water treated by this technology can reach Surface Water National Standard Level IV and relevant American standard for treated industrial wastewater. The technology has been awarded three patents for invention in the US and 30 Chinese patents for invention. 89 demonstration projects applying the technology has been carried out in eight provinces including Jiangsu, Henan, Anhui and Shandong, treating total of around 194 million tons of wastewater and reduced 374,000 tons of toxic organic COD. The technology is also used in the “Innovation Alliance of Water Recuse and Risk Control Technology in the Huai River Basin” program of the Ministry of Technology and the “Innovation Alliance of Organic Industrial Wastewater Control and Reuse Technology” program of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, which effectively ensured the implementation of the Huai River Pollution Control and Treatment Project and improved the water quality of Jialu River, a heavily polluted branch of Huai River.
Professor Li Aimin once said that “Innovation is the trend. Environmental industry is a rapidly growing emerging industry in Yancheng. Here in Yancheng, I find the foothold for my career”. Li Aimin is from Yancheng. In 2011, he proposed to Nanjing University and Yancheng Government to establish the Nanjing University-Yancheng Academy of Environmental Technology and Engineering to support coastal economic sustainable development in Jiangsu, protect drinking water safety and develop new environmental industry. Currently, the Academy is equipped with a team of 166 people and has become a strategic base of Nanjing University for environmental technological achievement transformation and an important industrial base for the National 12th Five-Year-Plan Key Program of Water Pollution Control and Treatment - Huai River Project. In the Sixth China-Yancheng Coastal Development Talent Summit, professor Li Aimin was awarded “Expert with Outstanding Contribution in Innovation and Entrepreneurship”.
